Bulgaria: Major Overhaul for Sofia this Summer

Sofia Municipality is working on multiple projects this summer. Mayor Yordanka Fandakova is determined to improve things further.

The largest ongoing project is the third metro line. Another pretty big one is the refurbishment of the very city center. This includes the Book Market on Slavejkov Square, Garibaldi Square and Graf Ignatiev Street.

Several boulevards will get an overhault too. On Boulevard Konstantin Velichkov, it is about speeding up the public transport while making it safer for thousands of passengers.

During the summer vacation, Sofia Municipality wants to install a “corridor” for trams and buses, as well as so-called tram stop islands, in order to prevent accidents.

One thing is certain: All of this will be expensive. At the same time all ongoing projects, and those which will be jump-started now, are necessary.

Imanuel Marcus wanted to see all of it with his own eyes. So he invaded Sofia with his video camera. This is his report.
