Hristo Botev Honored Across Bulgaria

Bulgaria remembered one of its most important heroes today. Hristo Botev, a poet and revolutionary, died 142 years ago today, when he was hit by an Ottoman sniper. Botev was only 28 years old.

In Sofia, the sirens sounded at noon today, in honor of Botev. Mayor Yordanka Fandakova had asked the city’s bus drivers to stop their vehicles at that moment, in memory of the fallen hero.

In Vratsa, close to where Botev was killed in 1876, President Rumen Radev honored Hristo Botev: “Great spirit, just a handful of companions and tragic destruction, this is the story of Botev and his comrades”, Radev said.

“This is also a frequent part of Bulgarian history. Not the bullet, but the indifference, the fear and the cowardice killed the poet.”
